Carol Wilson Caldwell was a native of Parmele, a small town in Eastern North Carolina. After attending undergraduate and law school at Valparaiso University in Indiana and passing the North Carolina Bar, Carol Wilson Caldwell opened her private Law Practice in the Eastern Carolina Town of Tarboro, fulfilling the dream of her Civil Rights grandfather and Educator, William C. Chance, Sr. However, she succumbed to breast cancer only six months after opening her law practice at the age of 30.
To honor the mission of Carol Wilson Caldwell, the Chance, Caldwell, and Wilson families and friends have established this "Legal" Scholarship Fund for the purpose of providing financial assistance to, preferably, Black and Minority law school students, who have been admitted to the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Law and, preferably , who intend to enter a Legal career in Eastern North Carolina or similar areas where there is a shortage of Black and minority legal representation. The scholarship fund has been set up as part of the North Carolina Central School of Law Scholarship Foundation.
Our top priority at the outset is to utilize all available technology and social media to communicate our mission to the public. The current climate in our country, both politically and socially, practically dictate the need for a new breed of social conscious Black and minority attorneys. So, we must constantly communicate this urgency to the public and potential donors.
The short term goals of this scholarship fund are to activate a dual "word of mouth" and online/social media campaign and to reach the endowment level of $25,000 by June, 2018 and the $100,000 level by December 2018.
The long term goal of the Carol Wilson Caldwell Legal Scholarship Fund is to establish at least two "full" scholarships for qualified students at North Carolina Central University School of Law by 2021.

SUBMITThe Carol Wilson Caldwell Legal Scholarship Fund was created in August 2016 as a successor to the original "Carol Wilson Caldwell Memorial Scholarship Foundation". The latter fund was established in 1976, shortly after the untimely death of Carol Wilson Caldwell and was active until 2014. Some of the previous board members of the original fund were James E. Leathers, Edward A. Chance, Mildred Council, Attorney Regina Moore, Attorney Jesse Baker, Jr., Attorney William C. Chance, Jr., Irma Casey, Attorney Milton Moore,Walter Plemmer, Anice C. Wilson, Dr. Moses A. Ray, Alonzo Street, Elsie Andrews, Milton Armstead, Connie Boyd, James Boyd, Louise Boyd, Attorney James Brown, Carol John Caldwell, James Gilliam, Rose Hicks, Horace Hussey, Mae Lindsey, Bishop Nathaniel Lindsey, Sondra A. Nelson, Bernice McEltath, Evelyn Clay, Ethel V. Ruffin, Jenette Modica, Curtis Perry, Attorney Robin Schofield, N.A. Slade, Cleon Cheek, Cathy Wallace, Harvey Modica, Jr., Sabrina McKenzie, and John T. Caldwell. During the life of the Carol Wilson Caldwell Memorial Scholarship Foundation there had been over 40 scholarship recepients, primarily to law students attending North Carolina Central School of Law.
A great deal of gratitude is owed to the founders and board members of the original scholarship fund because that set the standard for the new Carol Wilson Caldwell Legal Scholarship Fund, which will be endowed as a permanent scholarship fund at North Carolina Central School of Law.
